The Commission
A Barchetta, reborn.
The 166 MM is the car that made Ferrari's name — a Mille Miglia winner whose feather-light "barchetta" body by Carrozzeria Touring gave an entire class of sports car its shape. Few open Ferraris are rarer, and fewer still carry coachwork this delicate.
The body was penned by John Tojeiro, heavily influenced by the Ferrari 166 MM Barchetta. It's hand-formed aluminum over a tubular ladder frame with fully independent suspension by transverse leaf springs — quite advanced for the early '50s. The whole car weighs only around 1,700–1,800 pounds, which made it a giant-killer in period sports car racing. An Ace-Bristol won its class at Le Mans in 1957 and 1958, and they dominated SCCA production racing in the US.
